Legal research-- LAW-THE BASICS

For each of the sections below there are hints, related links, etc listed on the lower right of the screen.

  • Law Reviews-These are journals that specialize in scholarly commentary.
L-N law search will default to these sources.
These are secondary sources that are peer reviewed.
  • Federal and State Cases-You may search across all U.S. case law, by individual federal court or by individual state.
    • Court decisions are primary sources
    • State trial courts rarely publish their decisions.  At the federal level the U.S. District Courts decisions are published more often.
    • Cases at the appellate level do not have a jury, so the judge (or judges) will write their opinions, which are then published
    • Case law may be searched:
      • by topic,
      • by case name i.e. Party 1  v. (versus) Party 2
      • by citation--volume #   abbrev of court report title*    page #
        • abbreviations are listed in the Uniform Guide to Legal Citation.
        • L-N requires the proper number of spaces and periods, so you need to copy the citation as you see it.
      • by judge or counsel
  •  Federal and state codes--statute law and administrative law.  You may search across the U. S. Code, by general Code topic,  across all states, the Code of Federal Regulations (administrative regulations), and the Federal Register (the C. F. R. prior to publication).
